Things You'll Need:
- Mask
- Snorkel
- Fins (Flippers)
-
Step 1
First, understand the costs to start SCUBA diving. At a bare minimum you will need a mask, snorkel and fins. For good quality you should expect to pay a minimum of $200 for these three items. Also consider buying a wet suit for 200-350 dollars. The cost of basic instruction will vary from 300- 700 dollars.
-
Step 2
While you are taking your classes to start SCUBA diving, you should rent your equipment. This will allow you to decide what type of gear you like before you decide to buy, as this will be a substantial investment of $1000 or more.
-
Step 3
Next, decide on which school you wish to attend. The two largest organizations are PADI and NAUI, with PADI being the largest. PADI SCUBA schools can be found all over the world, and if possible try to attend a PADI "5 star" school. Also try to find a school that offers instruction all the way through "instructor", as these schools will have the largest number of resources.
-
Step 4
Finally, visit the school and talk to the instructors. Be sure you are comfortable with the instructor and the program. Make sure to get your questions answered, and understand the costs and risks before you begin.
