If you want to make money hosting a yard sale, you must first advertise your sale. Luckily, you have many options.

So, what steps should you take to ensure your yard sale is not only successful, but profitable too?

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

Write a listing for your local newspapers. You should aim for one or two advertisements in different newspapers. If your yard sale is on Friday or Saturday, your listing should appear in Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday newspapers. Include the date and time of your sale, your address, and a sample listing of what you have for sale.

  2. Step 2

Create a listing on Craigslist.org. Your listing will appear for longer on Craigslist than it will your local newspaper, so you can post your ad earlier. Aim for three to five days in advance. Give the date, time, and location of your sale. Since you are not limited on space, provide a detailed list of what is available. Also, consider taking and posting a picture of your current yard sale pile.

  3. Step 3

Create signs to hang around your neighborhood. The best approach is to visit your local dollar store or office supply store. Purchase masking tape, poster board, and permanent markers. Create a mixture of large and small signs. On the day of your sale, hang these around your neighborhood. Make sure they are easy to read from the road and use arrows to direct traffic.

Tips & Warnings
  • The best way to have a successful and profitable yard sale is to maximize your exposure. Let people know you have cheap things for sale. To do that, don’t just implement one of the above mentioned steps. Instead, try them all!
