Things You'll Need:
- Tube Socks
- Markers or Sharpie Pens
- Scissors
- Yarn
- Glitter
- Glue
- Googly Eyes
- Felt
-
Step 1
tube socksGo to your closest sock drawer and grab a long tube sock. I'd recommend using a sock that looks relatively new for this activity. You and your child's hands will be inserted into the sock after all. If the sock has big colored stripes at the open end, even better. This just adds a unique trait to every sock doll.
-
Step 2
magic markersGo grab as many colors of sharpie pens as you can find. If you don't have sharpie pens, any wide felt tipped pen would do. Magic markers would also work great.
-
Step 3
art suppliesGather your standard art supplies including scissors, yarn, glue, glitter, felt, and whatever else you can scrounge together. If you happen to have googly eyes available, you'll want to grab those too. Don't worry about not having the googly eyes though. The great thing about making a primitive sock doll, is there's no right way to make it.
-
Step 4
Find a space that you and your child can make your sock dolls. A kitchen table works great. I would suggest laying old newspapers over the table to collect any excess glue, glitter, or other messes that happen.
-
Step 5
You're now ready to start making your sock doll. Start by pulling the sock over your hand and down your forearm. Once the sock is tight to your hand, a mouth feature can be formed by holding your thumb below your other four fingers and squeezing it toward them. Use this form to determine where your doll's features will be drawn or placed.
-
Step 6
sock dollUse your imagination! You can use the string for hair, or draw the hair with markers. Felt could be used to make a hat. Glitter could be used for an added 'star' effect. Use the markers and pens to draw the mouth, nose, and eyes and ears. If you happen to have those googly eyes, glue them on wherever you see fit. None of the features need to be in a specific place. Sometimes, the goofier the sock doll looks, the more fun your child will have playing with it. Also feel free to make your sock doll as primitive as you wish. Two dots for eyes, and a small circle for a mouth would look great. Remember, this is meant to help your child to be creative. Allow them to choose what they want their sock doll to look like.
-
Step 7
sock dollsPlay with your sock dolls! It might be silly at first, but seeing how your child loves to create personalities for each sock doll will certainly put a smile on your face. Children love to play with puppets, and adults love to save money. After following these simple steps, you'll both be getting what you love. Enjoy!
