Deal With a Car Accident
Deal With a Car Accident

What to do after a minor car accident. There are steps you can take to protect yourself.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Phone (Preferably with a camera)
  • Insurance
  • Patience
  1. Step 1

If you are reading this in case of an accident, good for you!! The best thing you can do is prepare for one in order to avoid one. Chances are you have already been in an accident if you are reading this. There are things you can do to protect yourself from litigation and problems with insurance.

  2. Step 2

Get information. Take pictures of the scene, the vehicles, the other drivers info (insurance, Drivers LIC #, Name, Licence Plate, anything else you can think of, every little detail may be worth something later.)

  3. Step 3

As soon as you can, notify your insurance provider. Give them every detail you can about the accident if it was not your fault. If it was, you may want to get legal advise before you continue. That is something that is up to you to decide, but if you are at fault or believe you may, a lawyer is not a bad idea for your own protection.

  4. Step 4

Do not take calls from the other party or their insurance company unless your own insurance and/or lawyer says so. They will probably say don't talk to them, that's why you pay insurance and lawyers.

  5. Step 5

When you get a chance, as soon as possible, write everything you can think of down. Get a notebook and start writing things. Do the usual who, what, when, where, and how. What was the weather? Direction of the sunlight? Draw a picture of the roadways and cars involved. Were there witnesses? Write down who you talked to and when (police, insurance agents, lawyers). Write down everything you can, it may come in handy later.

  6. Step 6

Be patient and follow the directions of your legal advice. Don't try to scam insurance, it's not worth it if you get caught. Keep records of everything for yourself. Start a file and keep everything you have about the accident in there. Someday it may come in handy down the road after you've forgotten about the accident, like when you want to sell your car.

Tips & Warnings
  • Collect information. More is better!
  • Have a passenger? Get their view of things, too. Four eyes are better than two.
  • Don't argue with anyone about anything. You may get phone calls trying to get you to say something incriminating. Simply give the number of your insurance agent and hang up.
