Cookies. Don't Eat em, Delete em

One of the standard pieces of computer troubleshooting advice (besides 'reboot') is 'delete your cookies'. This can be a very useful thing to do, especially if an individual website isn't behaving properly. Cookies can interfere with proper log-in, page loading, password protection, and so on. Some cookies also are a computer security problem, and should be deleted. However, deleting ALL your cookies isn't always a very pleasant prospect, and they contain a lot of useful information that you've placed there deliberately. Here's how to selectively delete individual cookies in systems running Windows Vista.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Windows Vista
  1. Step 1
    Windows Keyboard Button
    Windows Keyboard Button

    **Open Your Directory**

Hold down the Windows button and press the letter 'E'. This will open up your file directory.

  2. Step 2

    **Know Your Cookie Files**

Vista stores cookies in two files, so you have to open each one individually and look for the cookies you want to delete.

    One file is here:

    C:\Users\USERNAME\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Cookies\

and the other, very similar file is here:

    C:\Users\USERNAME\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Cookies\Low\

Where it says USERNAME, you have to insert the actual name you created when you first got your computer (for instance, my username is DAVID).

  3. Step 3
    Cookies in Your Directory Window
    Cookies in Your Directory Window

    **Access Your Cookie Files**

Copy the first of the cookie directory names shown above, paste it into the address bar of your directory window (which you opened in Step #1). Hit 'Return/Enter' to bring up your list of cookie files.

NOTE: Opening the files in the normal fashion, by clicking through the various folders until you reach the Cookies folder, doesn't always work in Vista. I don't know why, but it just doesn't.

  4. Step 4

    **Find Your Cookie**

Click on the 'Name' column to sort your cookies alphabetically, and begin scanning them for the ones you want to delete. When you find a cookie that you want erased, just click on it, and hit Delete.

Alternatively, you can right-click, and delete it that way.
