Your brake system is hydraulic. Which means that it uses fluid to stop the car. Without the fluid, your brake system will not be able to stop the car. Plus low fluids can damage the brake system and can be costly to fix. So just follow the steps to get started on checking the brake fluid in your brake system.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Locate the master cylinder of the brake system. If you can't find it, use a service manual to help you locate the master cylinder.

  2. Step 2

Before removing the master cylinder cap, use a rag to clean around the area of it. Turn the master cylinder cap counter-clockwise and remove it. If you have any other type of master cylinder cap, use your service manual to help you open it.

  3. Step 3

Check the level of brake fluid. It should be between the high and low marks. Today's reservoirs are transparent so removal of the cap may not be necessary. If necessary, add fluid until it is up to level. Use a funnel to avoid spills.

  4. Step 4

Don't use brake fluid that is at least a year old. Fresh brake fluid is the best. If there are contamination in the fluid, then completely flush out the brake system. Reinstall the master cylinder cap.
