How to Become a Social Worker in BC
Social workers help improve lives through individual, family, organizational and community services, according to the British Columbia Association of Social Workers. This group, a respected body in the field of BC social work, describes social work as a profession "based on a commitment to social justice, equity, respect for diversity and critical thinking." Becoming a social worker in BC requires earning an appropriate degree and, in some cases, registering with a governing board.

Become a Qualified BC Social Worker

Research social work degrees. A BSW, which stands for bachelor of social work, is the minimum requirement to practice social work in British Columbia. An advanced degree, the MSW (master of social work), is required for some positions. The BC Association of Social Workers outlines the education involved in each degree.

Pick a school of social work. There are seven BC schools of social work and many Canadian schools. Lists of qualified schools are available from the BC Association of Social Workers and the Canadian Association for Social Work Education. You can also learn about U.S. schools from the Counsel on Social Work Education.

Check on foreign qualification requirements. If you were not educated in BC but want to practice social work, you can contact the International Credential Evaluation Service. ICES evaluates the qualifications for transferring foreign qualifications and credentials.

Research social work job opportunities. The employment outlook for social workers in BC is above average, according to BC Work Futures, a service provided by the Ministry of Advanced Education and Labour Market Development. They project that most social work positions will be available in remote communities outside of urban areas.
