make Monsterous deviled eggs

Deviled eggs are a welcome addition to any holiday table, and with a few simple steps you can customize them to fit in with your ghastly theme. This is a great project for your little helpers too!

This recipe is based off of using 6 eggs which creates 12 deviled eggs, so modify all the ingredients to suit your needs.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • 6 large eggs
  • 1 tblsp. mayonnaise
  • 2 tblsp. minced red onion
  • 1/4 tsp. garlic powder
  • 1 tblsp. prepared mustard (to taste)
  • salt and pepper to taste
  • california red chili pepper (optional)
  1. Step 1

The first step is to hard boil your eggs.

  2. Step 2

Wait until your eggs cool, then either crack them once gently on your counter, then turn and crack the exact opposite side of your egg in the same fashion. You don't want to break the egg apart, you just want to crack the shell. My sister likes to use a spoon for this step, as she feels she has better control of her designs that way.

  3. Step 3

Once all of your eggs are cracked, it's time to dye them. Normally, I just use black food coloring for this. You should be able to buy it in your grocery store in the baking aisle. I believe I paid about two dollars for the bottle that I bought roughly three years ago, so it's not expensive.
*This is where the little ones can help. The black dye will give the eggs a spiderweb appearance, but using red dye will make them look bloodshot. The last time I made this I let my son use a tie dye easter egg kit (bought on clearance after Easter) and he used all of the colors. I think the eggs came out rather gruesome looking, which worked well with our monster party theme. Don't worry about making them perfect, this is one of those projects where a mistake can actually improve your final product.

  4. Step 4

Set the eggs aside to dry.

  5. Step 5

Remove the shells, revealing your spooky designs! Rinse your eggs off and get out a medium size bowl.

  6. Step 6

Cut each egg in half lengthwise, and remove the yolk. Put all of your yolks into the bowl. Cut your ripe avocado in half, remove the pit, and add the avocado to the egg yolks. Mash them together.

  7. Step 7

Add the mayonnaise, onion, garlic powder, mustard, and salt and pepper to the avocado mixture. Stir it all up.

  8. Step 8

You can either spoon your filling back into the eggs, or use a pasty bag and large tip to fill them.

  9. Step 9

Sprinkle them with california red chili pepper if you desire.

  10. Step 10

Store, covered, in the refrigerator until ready to serve.

Tips & Warnings
  • You can use your own favorite deviled egg recipe to fill these as well. I included my avocado recipe because it comes out green, which my son tells me is perfect for Halloween, as green is a "gross" color for food. I really hope you enjoy them!
