This is part of my article series of how to use household herbs for minor illnesses. Thyme is a bitter sweet herb and its main purpose is for sinus congestion and runny noses. Thyme is an astringent. That means that it helps dry up the mucus. I have also heard that it helps speed up whatever is wrong with you (e.g. a cold). I recommend using dry organic thyme leaves that you can buy at any grocery store.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Thyme
  • Boiling water
  • Bread/Chip
  • Potatoes, eggs, rosemary, cayenne (red pepper), oregano, basil, parsley (all of these optional)
  • Fenugreek
  1. Step 1

Make a tea: Boil some water. While the water is boiling, crush up some dry thyme leaves. After the water is done boiling, you can use a little mesh ball to steep the thyme or you can just put the leaves in the water. Steep for ten minutes, covered. After it is done steeping, sip it. You will upset your stomach if you gulp the tea.

  2. Step 2

The faster way - Eat it straight: Thyme tea is not the best tasting tea out there. I usually get a cracker or a chip and put some thyme on it. This is not the tastiest way either, but you can do it right away and your runny nose will clear up. Be sure to chew the thyme a little bit to get the oils straight into your system.

  3. Step 3

The Tasty way - Use it in cooking: Thyme by itself is bitter. Here is my combo that I use on eggs and fried potatoes when I have a runny nose. Thyme, Cayenne (red pepper), Rosemary, Oregano, Basil, and Parsley. This combination of herbs tastes really good together and it helps, a little, with my nose. It is not as potent as taking thyme straight.

  4. Step 4

A Combination - Take Thyme and Fenugreek (another kitchen herb) together and your runny nose will dry up in as little as 20 minutes. You can use the fenugreek in any of the previous steps.

Tips & Warnings
  • If you decide to use a tea, you can sweeten it with honey.
  • If you have a headache along with your congestion, try mixing some rosemary in with your thyme (it will also sweeten the thyme up a bit).
  • If you want to stay awake and make it through the day, use more thyme. If you are taking it at night, less will help you sleep.
