How to Choose the Best Perennials thumbnail
Arizona Sun perennial

The best thing to consider when choosing perennials to use in your yard or flower borders is to decide what their use will be. For instance, some perennials are good for attracting bees. Butterflies might prefer a different flower. Other perennials are just there to add interest and look pretty. Choose your flowers accordingly. Does this Spark an idea?

In flower borders near a vegetable garden it is probably a wise idea to choose a perennial that will attract bees or butterflies. Some perennial choices are May Night Salvia, Butterfly Weed or a Pieris shrub. May Night Salvia will attract large bumblebees as well. Bees and butterflies will help in pollinating your summer vegetables so be sure to keep plenty of these kinds of plants nearby.

In front yard flower borders it is a good idea to add interest and color. This will help create good curb appeal. Some of my favorites are Arizona Sun perennial also called Gaillardia and Hostas. Arizona Sun plants will spread outward and in some areas will stay green through the winter. This perennial produces beautiful orange and yellow blooms and loves dry hot weather. Hostas will thrive in mostly shade. Too much sun will wilt them. Place hostas in flower beds at the base of large shade trees.

Perennials that will add height to an area include Pampas and other ornamental grasses that will return year after year. Place these types of plants around backyard ponds or in the back of your borders. These type of perennials grow to be large in size so you don't want these to overshadow your low mounding perennials.

Lavender is another popular perennial. It is low maintenance and will spread quickly. It provides a pleasant fragrance. Place lavender in a large border near entrances and walkways.
