Things You'll Need:
- Willpower
- Insecticide
- Weed trimmer
- Fish
-
Step 1
First take a look around your property. If you see any standing water get rid of it. Mosquito species oviposit (lay eggs) in or around standing water. Larva are generally called wrigglers because of the way they swim, remember to get rid of the greater mosquito problem get rid of the stagnant water.
-
Step 2
If you can't get rid of the water (too big or ornamental) treat it for mosquitoes. There are many products that can be used to treat ponds to kill mosquito larva. There are predatory minnows and larvacides. Predatory minnows can be ordered on line, make sure you get the top feeding kind. Larvacides use one of two insecticides to kill mosquito larva, bti and Methoprene. Common names for these products are Mosquito Dunks, Mosquito Quick kill granules (bti) and PreStrike Granules (Methoprene). Use as directed. Additionally if its a bird bath just empty it at least once per week and it should reduce your mosquito problem.
-
Step 3
Next clean your gutters, trim your weeds and trees, unclog drain spouts, get rid of swampy areas, etc. etc. You want to do all this lawn work to remove breeding and resting areas. The water is where mosquitoes breed, the low lying weeds and trees are where the mosquitoes hang out till evening. Pesticide applied to your trees and shrubs should knock out mosquitoes quite well, use a pyrethoid spray, but will have to be applied periodically.
-
Step 4
Now on to mosquito repellant. Use anything with deet, deet is the most effective repellant for mosquitoes. The higher the deet concentration the long it lasts. If you can't use deet then the use of citronella oil additive replant will work as well, but not as well as deet.
-
Step 5
If you can avoid peak times when mosquitoes are out, usually dusk. Traps have almost not statistical data to back up the claims of killing/repelling mosquitoes so be wary. Citronella candles also work as a means of repelling and should be used in combination with another spray on repellant as well (remember to spray your clothing as well). Also what you may want to look into is constructing bat houses or martin houses on your property for a more natural means of control. These creatures will consume mosquitoes as part of their diets, but be warned mosquitoes only make a small portion of thier diet, other insects also will be eaten (such as butterflies and moths). Following these steps should at least make a dent in your mosquito problem.
