After reading this article you will know how to make authentic Lebanese Baklava. This recipe has been handed down to me through generations of ancestors.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • 4 sticks of Land o' Lakes Butter
  • Athens Philo Dough
  • 1 cup walnuts or pecans
  • 1 cup water
  • vanilla extract
  • rose water
  • lemon juice
  • 2 cups of sugar, divided
  • 13x9" pan
  • small saucepan
  1. Step 1

Unfold philo dough and cut it in half down the width. Cover with a towel to make sure it does not dry out while you are working. Melt 1 stick of butter, but be sure not to burn it! This is VERY important. Coat entire pan with thin layer of butter.

  2. Step 2

Layer philo sheets into pan one at a time. As you use up the butter melt 1 stick at a time. After each sheet, coat with butter to make the next sheet stick. When you are finished with half of the sheets (you need to count how many are there first), you are ready for the nut/sugar mixture.

  3. Step 3

To make the nut mixture, grind 1 cup of nuts with 1 cup of sugar. Make sure the nuts are not too coarse. Empty entire mixture onto philo sheets in pan, then start layering sheets again, first with sheet then butter. When you are finished layering, cut the baklava either in squares or diamond shapes.

  4. Step 4

Bake in the oven on 350 degrees for 1 hour or until a nice golden color. To make the glaze that goes over the top: combine 1 cup water, 1 cup sugar, 1 capful of vanilla extract, 1 capful of rose water, and 1 capful of lemon juice. Bring to a boil. Make sure you do not burn! Remove from heat, Drizzle over the top, and Enjoy!

Tips & Warnings
  • Serve chilled.
  • Makes great holiday treats for the neighbors.
  • Cannot stress this enough- DO NOT BURN THE BUTTER OR GLAZE!
