Instructions

    • 1

Import the picture you want to use in your project. The picture should originally be in full color.

    • 2

Duplicate the layer of the picture. In the "Layer" window, right-click on the file and select "Duplicate Layer." If you want to label the layer, title it "Black & White."

    • 3

Click on the duplicate layer. Add the "De-saturate" effect to the layer. This removes all the color from the layer and transforms it to black and white. If you prefer to use an action or GIMP effect to turn your photo black and white, use those options.

    • 4

Click on the eraser tool. Set it anywhere from "50 percent" to "100 percent."

    • 5

Use the eraser tool over the parts you want to make in color. They will instantly appear in color as the black-and-white layers disappear and the color layer pops up from underneath.

    • 6

Use the pen tool as an alternative to the eraser tool. Draw around the area that you want in color. Right-click inside the area and select "Make Selection." Press "Delete" and the area will appear in color.
