Clean a Garbage Disposal
Clean a Garbage Disposal

Let's face it, one of the worst smelling appliances in a home can be a garbage disposal. However, the garbage disposal is one of the easiest appliances to clean. Follow the next few steps to a fresh, clean garbage disposal.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • baking soda
  • vinegar
  • 1 egg, unbroken
  • chlorine bleach
  • orange peel
  1. Step 1

The first thing you will need to do is clean out the foul smelling gunk already inside your garbage disposal. To do this, pour about a half a cup of baking soda down into your garbage disposal. Follow the baking soda with about a cup of vinegar. It WILL foam, and break up the gunked on filth that resides in the garbage disposal. Allow the mixture to stand for a few minutes. Then, pour hot water down the drain to clear the mixture from the garbage disposal.

  2. Step 2

To sharpen the blades of the garbage disposal, place the whole egg inside the garbage disposal and turn on the unit. Allow garbage disposal to run until you can no longer hear the sound of the eggshell scraping against the blades. Turn the garbage disposal off and run cool water down the drain.

  3. Step 3

Next, mix water with 1/4 cup of liquid chlorine bleach. Pour this mixture down the garbage disposal while running to allow it to sanitize all the moving parts inside the garbage disposal. Rinse the mix down with cool running water.

  4. Step 4

To add a little extra fresh smell to the garbage disposal, place an orange peel inside the garbage disposal and allow the garbage disposal to run. Remember to run cool water any time you run your garbage disposal.

Tips & Warnings
  • NEVER place your hand near the drain while the garbage disposal is running.
