So your tired of all those endless trips to the tanning salon to get ready for summer? All that driving, waiting and not to mention having to be out in public after tanning. Or maybe you have a health condition that requires tanning visits? Or how about you caught some crazy skin fungus from using the tanning beds at the salon? Well, what ever the reason you might be considering buying a home tanning bed.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

The first thing you want to know is the amount of space you have for a tanning bed. Some beds require more than others. Most all manufacturers or suppliers of home tanning beds will have minimum room requirements on hand so be sure to take measurements of your area. You will also want to make sure your floor is sturdy and not in need of repair. Consider the material the bed is made of for your needs.

  2. Step 2

Now you have an idea of what size area you are working with you need to know how big of a bed you will need. Home tanning beds usually have between 16 to 32 bulbs. If you are large or over 6 feet tall you will want a tanning bed with at least 28 bulbs. Most 24 bulb beds are only 6 feet long. Of course the more bulbs the more expensive and the more upkeep.

  3. Step 3

Most home tanning beds come with some sort of standard issued bulb. Ask the rep about how many hours they are good and if the bed keeps up with that information. If you can maintain the bed yourself it can save you a lot of money. Look for a bed that has bulbs and starters that are easy to replace so you don't have to hire a professional.

  4. Step 4

If cost is an issue with the home tanning bed you choose you will want to consider the type of electric current a bed requires. Manufacturers do make some smaller beds that just plug into a regular wall however most tanning beds, even home tanning beds require something called a buck booster. These are transformers that regulate the current on the bed. Most will require the voltage be something odd. Several home tanning beds will need to be on a voltage between 220 to 230. Which leads to another cost, unless you know quite a bit about electrical work you will have to hire an electrician to hook this up.

  5. Step 5

Now in order to get the best deal on a home tanning bed this is a secret that most people do not know. When shopping around for the best price do not start with the manufacturer. There are certain very popular brands of home tanning beds that will block you from all other dealers carrying their product if you get a quote with them. I have found, especially when dealing with a cash sale that it is much cheaper to buy it from a supplier or showroom. You usually can pick it up yourself as well and save on the shipping price. Just make sure you get several quotes. You don’t have to waste fuel just call and ask “what’s the best deal you have on a certain bulb home tanning bed”.

Tips & Warnings
  • I did not include the time of session in my article because most home tanning units are 15 minutes now. It's commercial beds that vary more.
  • Tanning does increase the risk of skin cancer.
  • Never go more than one session a day.
  • Buy from a reputable seller who provides a warranty and get warranty details before buying.
