This is a guide to help people remove tangles from their hair after having worn synthetic braids

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Olive Oil
  • Conditioning Cap
  • Towel or a Hood Hair Dryer
  1. Step 1

After removing your braids, you will have some tangles that you have to work through before you can wash and condition your hair. First, you will need some quiet time set aside. If possible, have the person who helped you remove your braids stick around to help you detangle your hair.

  2. Step 2

You will need some Extra Virgin Olive Oil from the grocery store. Spray or sprinkle your hair very lightly with water, and add a generous amount of oil to your hair, ensuring that your roots and scalp are saturated.

  3. Step 3

Put on a conditioning cap and sit under your hood dryer for 20 minutes. Alternatively, wrap your hair in a towel and allow oil to sit for an hour or longer. For best results, sit under the dryer for 20 minutes, wrap your hair and a towel and let oil remain to soak into your hair and scalp for an hour or longer.

  4. Step 4

Gently section your hair off into small manageable sections. Most will need at least 8 sections. Clip off each section with a butterfly clip, bob pin, or whatever you have handy.

  5. Step 5

Release the first section. Run your fingers through the hair several times to release any large tangles. If there is any matting add extra oil and a sprinkle of water to further soften and prepare the hair. Take a large tooth comb (such as the Jilbere shower comb) and hold the entire section with your fists allowing the ends to hang loose. Comb the loose ends.

  6. Step 6

Gradually work your way up towards the roots. Be careful not to tear at the hair or break the hair. Use a light touch.

  7. Step 7

Work your way through each section. If you get tired or frustrated, take a break before you continue.

  8. Step 8

Wash the hair with a clarifying shampoo, and deep condition with an excellent reconstructor such as Affirm 5 n 1 reconstructor.

Tips & Warnings
  • Do not wear braids with extensions longer than 2 months. It makes the detangling process too complicated and if that is the case you will lose hair because of tangling/matting.
  • Do not get rough with your hair or allow anyone to be rough with your hair. After braids, you hair is at a weak and vulnerable state and extra care is required.

on 5/24/2009 After removing braids or weaves Matted/ Tangled hair is such a big problem. Whether you leave them in for 1 month or 4 months tooo long- your hair can get realy tangled. And DO NOT shampoo your hair right after taking braids or a sew-in weave out. If you do your hair will stick together and matt up in one big massive matted clump. Everybodys hair can get tangled. For really exteme cases of severely tangled/matted hair, "birds nest" , knots, balls of matted hair or clumps of tangled hair-There is a product on the market called the Take Down Remover Cream. It removes dreadlocks, but it works well with very matted/tangled hair. Dreadlocks are just long strands of uncombed matted hair . Hairdressers just want to cut the hair when it is severely matted or tangled. We are trying to save hair.
