Amphibians have been declining rapidly worldwide since the 1980s. While there are many reasons thought to be responsible for these declines (including habitat destruction, pollution, increased UV radiation, invasive species, and disease) it seems that no single factor is responsible. To raise awareness of amphibian declines and hopefully raise funds for continued research and monitoring a group of renowned herpetologists have created Save the Frog Day on 29 April 2009. There are many ways you can celebrate Save the Frog Day and help amphibians.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • computer
  • poem
  • artwork
  • donations
  1. Step 1

    Visit the website www.savethefrogs.com.

  2. Step 2

Learn about local amphibians. You can find resources at local colleges and universities, libraries, conservation departments, nature centers and zoos.

  3. Step 3

Teach about amphibians. If you are a seasoned herpetologist (or even a budding one) share your knowledge! Go to schools and teach children about the importance of amphibians within the ecosystem and about the general biology of this taxon.

  4. Step 4

Write a poem. The Save the Frogs organization has a poetry contest ongoing. Entries are due no later than 4 May 2009.

  5. Step 5

Create a work of art. Your art could win the chance to be on buttons, bumperstickers, or t-shirts. Make sure to submit by 4 May 2009.

  6. Step 6

Create a video. Save the Frogs is having a video contest for filmmakers who create a video involving amphibians and their conservation. Make sure to submit by 4 May 2009.

  7. Step 7

Support the organization. Hold fundraisers for the cause. Go onto the Save the Frogs website and purchase posters, wrist bands, tshirts, pins or bumper stickers.

  8. Step 8

Spread the word! There are buttons and links at the Save the Frogs site that you can add to the signatures of your emails or your Facebook profiles.

  9. Step 9

Get ready for next year! This event is going to be held annually in the last week of April. The next date is 30 April 2010. Be ready!
