Make Ferret Toys

If you have a pet ferret, you know how energetic and curious they can be. Providing them with toys will keep them occupied, out of trouble and happy. You don't have to buy expensive toys when you can make your own ferret toys at home using items from around the house. An old pillowcase and cardboard boxes are just some of the items you can use.

Things You'll Need

  • Fishing float
  • Strong string
  • Large plastic bowl
  • Sharp knife
  • Old pillowcase
  • Scrap paper
  • Cardboard boxes
  • Masking tape
  • Ping-pong balls

Instructions

    • 1

Tie a large fishing float to a length of strong string. Attach it to the top of a doorway or from the ceiling so that it hangs low enough for the ferret to reach it. Set the float swinging and watch the ferret run after it.

    • 2

Clean out a large plastic bowl that you don't need anymore and cut several holes around its perimeter using a sharp knife. Your ferret will love to get inside this homemade toy, roll around, and poke through the holes.

    • 3

Fill an old pillowcase with crinkled scrap paper. Use different types of paper, if possible, to make the ferret toy even noisier. Place it on the ground and watch your ferret roll around on it to produce noise.

    • 4

Cut holes in the sides and bottoms of several different-shaped cardboard boxes, making them large enough for your ferret to squeeze through. Construct a tower with the boxes, one on top of the other, and secure them in place using the masking tape. Your ferret will love to climb in and through the new toy.

    • 5

Cut a few holes in the side of a small cardboard box, making them large enough for your ferret to get his arm inside. Put several ping-pong balls in the box, shake it up to get his attention, and watch him reach in and go after the balls.

Tips & Warnings

  • * If you don't have a fishing float, you can use any item that you like to make the first ferret toy--just make sure it is large enough and won't harm your ferret. A ball or small stuffed toy will work fine.

  • * Do not use materials that are small enough for your ferret to swallow when you make these ferret toys. This can lead to choking or suffocation.
