How to Prevent the Corrosion of Iron
There are several ways to deter the corrosion of iron, one of which is cathodic protection. This method is used on marine or underground constructions, water storage containers, gas pipelines, oil platform supports, and other structures exposed to corrosive surroundings. Cathodic protection works by delivering an electrical charge that blocks the electrochemical reaction thus bringing the metal towards an immune state. Another method to inhibit corrosion is by isolating the iron from its environment. One way to do this is through galvanization, which consists of applying a layer of zinc to the metal, either by electroplating or by hot-dip galvanizing. Iron can also be isolated by coating it with a protective paint. Prevent the corrosion of iron by using anti-rust paint. Does this Spark an idea?
Things You'll Need
- The iron item that needs protecting
- Newspapers or a drop cloth
- Anti-rust primer
- Anti-rust paint (can be in a spray or in a paint can)
- Clean, dry cloth
- Paintbrush or roller
- Steel wool or sandpaper (optional)
Instructions

Cover your work area with newspapers or a drop cloth to protect it from paint splatters.
-
2
Rub the iron item all over with a dry cloth to remove dust or any tiny particles of rust.
-
-
3
Using the brush or roller, apply anti-rust primer to the bare metal surface.
-
4
Allow the primer sufficient time to dry (according to manufacturer's instructions).
-
5
Using a paint brush, roller or spray paint, apply one coat of anti-rust paint making sure all areas are adequately covered.

Tips & Warnings
If item has already begun to rust, sand lightly or rub with steel wool until all loose rust flakes have been removed before you begin. If you are painting a large, flat surface, use the roller, saving the brush for edges and details. If you are painting something intricate or smaller, use the paint brush.
Be sure to paint in a well ventilated space.
