Things You'll Need:
- Tape measure
-
Step 1
Measure the size of your child or baby's foot with a tape measure. Start at the end of the largest toe and measure to the heel. Measure the width of the foot. Use these measurements to determine the size.
-
Step 2
Place the child's feet in the shoes. Children and babies should be in a seated position, if possible. Have the child wear socks if the shoes require them.
-
Step 3
Feel the end of the shoes. There should at least 1/4 inch of give at the end of the toe. The sides of the shoe should also have a bit of extra space so they don't pinch.
-
Step 4
Make sure no straps are too loose. The best shoes for babies are slip-ons with very little ornamentation. Any straps should fit snugly, but not so tight as to create friction.
-
Step 5
Ask the child to walk around in the shoes. Babies should be held and walked, if possible, to make sure they can toddle around in the shoes. Determine if the shoes fit well with movement.
