How to Make a Desk Blotter

A desk blotter is a pretty and functional desk accessory that can brighten up a desk area. Instead of purchasing a ready-made desk blotter, take approximately an hour and make your own to look exactly the way you want it to look. This desk blotter even has useful pockets on each outer side edge for tucking in notes and cards for easy access and remembering. This fun and simple project will result in a great looking desk blotter.

Things You'll Need

  • Foam core
  • Utility knife
  • Wrapping paper (any color or pattern desired)
  • Complementary wrapping paper
  • Clear Duct tape
  • Scissors
  • Card stock
  • Tape measure
  • Pencil
  • Glue stick

Instructions

    • 1

      Measure and cut a 22-inch by 12.5-inch piece of foam core with the utility knife.

      Cut a piece of wrapping paper 2 inches larger than the foam core. Wrap the wrapping paper around to the back of the foam core and tape the edges down securely with the clear duct tape.

      Measure out two 12.5-inch by 3.25-inch pieces of card stock with the tape measure and pencil. Cut the pieces out with the scissors.

      Measure out two 14.5 by 5.25 pieces of complementary paper to wrap around the card stock pieces with the tape measure and pencil. Cut the pieces out with the scissors.

      Position a card stock piece at a short side of the covered foam core, lining up the edges.

      Wrap the duct tape around the card stock several times around the front of the card stock and the back of the foam core to attach the card stock to the foam core.

      Repeat step 5 and 6 to attach the other piece of card stock to the other short side of the foam core.

      Apply a line of glue stick down the inner edge of a card stock piece.

      Line up the complementary paper along the card stock and wrap it around to the back side carefully along the top, bottom and outside edges. Take the time to make your corners neat and tape them down securely on the back side with the clear duct tape.

      Repeat steps 8 and 9 with the other card stock piece on the other side of the blotter.
