How to Turn Off the Windows 2000 Select Operating System Feature
A common complaint from Windows 2000 users is the operating system selection screen during the boot process. Windows 2000 provides users with a menu to select the desired version of Windows 2000 they wish to open during the boot process. For most users, there is only one system shown. This can add an extra thirty seconds to the boot process. To save time and make the boot process simpler, you can turn off the Windows 2000 select operating system feature.

Check both the "Search System Folders" and "Search Hidden Files and Folders." Press "Search" to begin your search. Open the "boot.ini" file when it appears.

5
Change the "timeout" to 0 (zero). The default is 30. This will allow your default selection to boot automatically without the system waiting for you to choose a selection. You can change your default selection in Step 6.
-
6
Change the "default" line to your default partition. If you typically choose the first operating system on the selection list during start up, leave this line alone. If you choose another selection, edit as directed below.
-
7
Find your selection in the list of partition options below the "operating systems" line. Note the "partition" number in parenthesis. Change the "partition" number in the "default" line to the partition number from your chosen selection. This will change your default selection to the second or third option on the boot up list.
