Hot flashes are momentary sensations of heat, often accompanied by a flushed complexion and sweating. It is common for women going through menopause to experience hot flashes. While hot flashes may be impossible to avoid completely, these steps will help you reduce their frequency and duration.

      Maintain healthy habits. Tobacco, alcohol and caffeine are all known triggers of hot flashes. Avoiding tobacco products and limiting your daily alcohol and caffeine intake will help prevent hot flashes from happening.

      Exercise on a regular basis. Walking, swimming and bicycling are all helpful for preventing hot flashes.

      Reduce stress. In addition to exercising, practice deep, rhythmic breathing for 15 minutes every morning and 15 minutes every night. Staying relaxed is paramount to preventing hot flashes.

      Keep cool. Wear light, cotton clothing and use fans during the day. Keep your bedroom cool at night while you sleep.

      Talk to your doctor. Inquire about possible prescription remedies for hot flashes like antidepressants or short-term hormone therapy. Be sure to ask for information regarding possible over-the-counter solutions like Ibuprofen or Vitamin E.
