How to Draw a Front View of a Puppy Sitting

Puppies are very cute and fun to draw. Drawing the front view of a puppy sitting may seem hard at first because the body is foreshortened. And a front view sometimes ends up being symmetrical (same on both sides), and that doesn't look very lifelike. Here are some tips for drawing a puppy from the front.

Look at some photos of puppies sitting to give you an idea of what kind of puppy you want to draw. In this case, we'll do a Jack Russell puppy.

      Rough Shapes

Rough out the basic shapes while looking at the photo. Figure out where the head and the body are going to go. Breaking down an object into simpler shapes is good practice for drawing even very complex animals and objects.

Add in the legs and ears and nose. It's OK to be very loose--the idea is to practice seeing what's there. If one leg hides the other, it's good to draw both lines crossing each other. This makes sure that your puppy's legs are where they're supposed to be. Also, if you draw one hip coming slightly out, your puppy will look more realistic than if you draw your puppy with symmetry. Animals and people look much more natural if their right side and left side are in different positions.

      Detailed Puppy Sketch

Fill in details of the eyes and mouth and shading once the body is in good shape. Consider drawing the fur so it goes along the curve of the body. This will look more realistic and will make your drawing more believable.

If you want, you can trace over your puppy in pen and erase the pencil. Or you can color him in with colored pencil or crayon.
