How to Measure a Man's Sport Coat

Dressing well is important in today's society. "The clothes make the man" is more than a cliché. Nothing reflects more poorly on a man during an interview or on a date than stringy hair, scuffed shoes or a badly fitted sport coat. Before your next big engagement, take steps to groom yourself properly, shine those shoes and learn how to measure for a well-fitted sport coat. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Get a helper with long arms, if possible, to help you measure for a sport coat. She will need to have pencil and paper handy to write down the measurements so that you don't forget them.

    • 2

Stand in the middle of a well-lit room wearing a shirt, a sweater or whatever other article(s) of clothing you expect to wear with your sport coat most often. Now your helper should measure around the biggest part of your chest using a tape measure.

    • 3

Place a clothes pin under the tape measure to loosen it a bit. Whatever the measurement is, raise it to the next even number, meaning that a 41-inch chest measurement would become a size 42.

    • 4

Measure your height if you don't already know it. If you are less than 6 feet tall, your coat length will be a "regular." If you are over 6 feet tall, your coat length will be a "long."
