How to Get Rid of Black Mold in a House

  1. Step 1

Spray any mold you can find with bleach or vinegar. Vinegar is advised for fabrics or colored items, and straight bleach for tiles, concrete and other hard materials.

  2. Step 2

Apply heat by using a space heater aimed at the mold. Mold thrives in damp warmth but dry heat will kill and repel it. Sprinkle baking soda around the area to soak up moisture and help dry the area.

  3. Step 3

Use a scrub brush to brush away any remaining mold residue. Feel free to use bleach or vinegar while cleaning it up. To ensure that the area is completely dry, allow it to sit with the space heater overnight.

  4. Step 4

Increase ventilation and keep the areas where mold was found open and lighted to prevent future mold occurrences. Take preventative steps whenever there is an increase in moisture in basements or attics. Humidity creates a perfect environment for mold to thrive. A dehumidifier is a good idea in humid climates.

Tips & Warnings
  • Working through the house one room at a time is the best way to kill and remove mold while keeping it contained in the room you are working in to prevent the spread to unaffected areas.
  • Mold spores become airborne when you disturb them. Wear a face mask at all times when dealing with mold to prevent breathing the spores, which can cause allergic reactions, asthma attacks and other health problems.
