Dig with the shovel throughout the spot to loosen the dirt, turn over approximately 2 inches of dirt and break up large clumps.

Add potting soil and/or compost to the soil and work it in with a yard rake. This will incorporate the fertilizing action of the soil amendments that previously wouldn't grow grass. When you are finished, you should have a fine dark soil, without any clumps or rocks. Be generous with the potting soil/compost. It will nourish your grass and blend in with the existing soil to improve your lawn.

Cover the area with grass seed. Since you are repairing an area, you will want to be lavish with the grass seed so that when it grows in, it will be full and lush.

Sprinkle a layer of topsoil or compost over the grass seed.

Add a layer of straw over the grass seed to help hold in moisture and warmth. That layer will promote the growth of your new grass.

Water thoroughly and keep people and animals off the area while the grass germinates and begins to grow. Water daily and protect the area until the grass is thick and strong.
