Purchase grass seed that is suitable for your region. Read package labels and directions carefully to find the type of grass that will fit your needs.

Prepare the ground by loosening the dirt with a rake. If you are working in a small yard, this can easily be accomplished with a hand rake. Otherwise, you may need a tractor.

Spread the seed with a broadcast spreader. Spreaders come in various shapes and sizes. Some are hand-held; others can be attached to a lawn mower or tractor. When spreading the seed, work back and forth, seeding your lawn from one end to the other.

Cover the seed with hay or straw. This is done in effort to prevent birds from eating the seed. Covering the seeds will also prevent them from getting washed away in the rain.
