How to Troubleshoot an Apple iPod Battery

Although iPods can offer users tons of memory and save thousands of songs, all of these songs and all of this memory does not matter much if the iPod battery is not properly working. When a battery does not work correctly, there are a few things that could possibly have caused the problem. In order to remedy the problem, you must first determine from what the problem stems. That is why troubleshooting an Apple iPod battery is important.

Pay attention to where you have plugged in the iPod to recharge the battery. Not every kind of USB port is strong enough to recharge a battery. For example, some Mac computers have USB ports on their keyboards. If the iPod is plugged into one of these USB ports, unplug it and plug it in somewhere else.

Check to see how your computer is operating if the iPod is plugged into it to recharge. While the USB ports on most computers are easily able to recharge Apple iPod batteries, they are only able to do so if the computer is active. If the computer is set to go to sleep after a few minutes, you will either want to change the computer's sleep settings, remember to move the computer mouse every few minutes to keep it active or plug in the iPod somewhere else.

Check what kind of operating system the computer you are plugged into runs on. Although iPods can be plugged into almost any kind of computer, not every operating system works well with iPods. For example, if your computer uses Windows 2000, there are extra steps that need to be taken to get the computer capable of recharging the Apple iPod battery (see Resources below).

Unplug some of the devices from the USB ports in your computer. Even if there are several USB ports on the computer, it sometimes is true that the computer is unable to process a lot of external devices at once. If you have other devices like cell phones, cameras or flash drives also hooked into the USB ports, remove these devices and re-insert the iPod USB port. The Apple iPod battery should now be able to charge.

Check the functionality of the ports on the computer. Some of the computer's USB ports may not be functioning properly. If you plug in the iPod USB cord into a USB port and the battery does not charge, unplug it and try another device to see if the computer recognizes it. If the computer does not, there may simply be a problem with the USB port.

Tips & Warnings

  • There is a chance the USB cord could be faulty. Try another USB cord to see if it works better.

  • Do not try to open the iPod and work on the battery yourself. Doing something like this could void your iPod warranty.
