Sometimes you go to the department store and see a shirt dress with a design that you really like. Sometimes, however, the shirt dress doesn't fit as well as you like on your physique. The easiest remedy here is to buy the shirt and take it to the tailor. But, what if you are on a budget? Another option is for you to tailor fit the shirt dress on your own.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Sewing machine Pins Tape measure Thread
  1. Step 1

First you have to try on the shirt dress and decide how you want it to fit on you. The usual problem with shirt dresses is that it they are too wide. Use the pins to mark the parts of the shirt dress you will be taking in. If you are making changes to the hem of the shirt dress, also use pins.

  2. Step 2

Measure the different parts of the shirt. Make a sketch of the dress and plot the different measurements. The sketch will help to guide you when you begin to do your repairs. Place the measurements on the sketch. Beside the original measurement, indicate your estimate of the resulting measurements after the repairs.

  3. Step 3

Keep a lot of pins on hand just in case you need to be very detailed on the stitches that you are going to make. Ensure before beginning your work that you give 1/2 inch or more so the shirt does not fit too tightly on your body. Put the shirt on and make any necessary changes to the placement of the pins.

  4. Step 4

Remove the shirt dress from your body and start repairing it by sewing in the areas where you have put pins. It is recommended that you sew it manually first. Just make temporary running stitches, as this is still a draft.

  5. Step 5

Remove the pins from the shirt dress. Finalize the stitches of the shirt dress with a sewing machine. Try on your newly tailored shirt dress.

Tips & Warnings
  • Be careful when you are stitching the shirt dress and ensure that the temporary stitches do not leave marks in the cloth.
