How to Convert VHS to DVD on a PC
VHS videos can be recorded onto DVDs through your PC rather than a DVD recorder. You need more than just the DVD burner on your computer, however. You will also need a device called a video capture card to connect the VCR to the computer. These devices include a video editing program that will convert the VHS video to a digital file and allow you to burn the converted video onto a DVD.

1
Install a video capture card to your PC. Connect the external device through a USB port, and install the software disc.
-
2
Attach the VCR's output to the video capture card. Most cards will have the choice of RCA composite (the yellow, white and red plugs and ports,) or S-Video (a round connection with five pins) connection. S-Video provides better quality.

3
Play the VHS tape and press the program's "capture" button. On some programs, this doesn't immediately start the conversion. You must select a name for the file and press the second "capture" button from the dialog box.
-
4
Stop the recording once the entire video has been converted to digital. Some programs have a "stop capturing" time interval that you can set from the "capture" dialog box that will automatically stop the conversion after the set time.
-
5
Insert a recordable DVD. Click the program's "make movie" or "transfer/record to DVD" button to record the digital video to the disc.

Tips & Warnings
If the capture card has video output ports, you can also connect it to a TV. Having the second screen can help you compare the video image quality. Make sure no other applications are running while converting videos, as this takes up a lot of the computer's power.
