1
Spread a glob of peanut butter inside the far end of the toilet paper roll. The mouse should have to crawl all the way through the roll to get to the peanut butter; don't place it in the middle.
-
2
Balance the toilet paper roll on the edge of the counter top, so that the end with the peanut butter hangs over the edge of the counter as far as possible without tipping the roll over.

3
Place an empty trash can beneath the edge of the counter where the toilet paper roll is placed. When the mouse crawls through the toilet paper roll to get the peanut butter, his weight should tip the roll off of the counter, causing the mouse to fall into the trash can.

Cover the top of the trash can loosely once you have the mouse. Make sure the lid is not airtight, so that the mouse can still breathe. Drive the mouse to an area several miles from your home, preferably uninhabited woods or parkland. Remove the lid from the can and gently tip it over, releasing the mouse into the wild.
