Think of an idea for your website. While some people think it's a good idea to develop a website around a topic that will bring in a lot of money, this thinking is backwards. Instead, develop a website around a topic that you are passionate about. If you are passionate about a topic, you will stick with it and will continue writing and adding to the site. This will bring in revenue. If you're not passionate about it, you'll eventually abandon the site, and the income will fizzle out.

Narrow down your topic at least a little. In websites and writing, topics are called niches. Your job at this point is to narrow your niche down into a narrower subniche. For instance, if you'd like to make a site about parenting, you could narrow it down to a site about parenting toddlers, or parenting children with special needs.

Think of a name for your website. As much as you'd like to have a cute play on words type of name, search engines will like you more (and readers will find you more easily) if you name your site something that tells the reader what the site is about.

Register your domain name. This will allow you to have a website with your chosen name as a URL. One place to register is GoDaddy (see Resources).

    • 5

Find a hosting plan to host your website. You basically pay a web hosting company rent for them to allow you to place your site on their servers so that it can be seen by the entire world. One of the best, most reasonably-priced web hosting companies is HostGator, where you can host an unlimited number of websites for less than $8 per month (see Resources).

Add pay-per-click ads on your site by joining Google Adwords (see Resources). Registration is free, and the application is easy to fill out. You typically get a response within two business days. Add the code to your site by following the Google Adwords tutorials, at the links that will be sent to you with your approval email.

Register for affiliate networks. Affiliate networks are sites that act as middlemen between merchants (stores) and affiliates (website owners). After registering with affiliate networks, you can search their lists of merchants to see which programs are a good fit with your website. For instance, if your website is about candy making, you should search for merchants who sell things like candy molds, ingredients, wrappers, and so forth. You can find a list of legitimate and reputable affiliate networks at The Affiliate Mom (see Resources).

Add advertisements and links to your website. After searching the affiliate networks and finding merchants that fit well with your website, add the code that the networks provide you to your websites. This will place banner or text ads on your website. When users click on the ads and purchase something from the merchants, you will earn commission.

Sell advertising space on your website. If your site becomes popular, and has a wide readership, you can offer private ad space to people who want to advertise their goods, services, or websites on your site. You determine the price on your own, depending on the number of readers you have, the duration of the ad, and the placement and size of the ad.
