How to Remove an Old Keyed-Entry Lock

Removing an old keyed-entry lock can be accomplished in less than 10 minutes. This job does not require special tools or skills, and can be done quickly and easily by one person. Does this Spark an idea?

      Set Screws

      Use your Phillips head screwdriver to remove the set screws. The set screws are located on the inside of the door on the cover plate behind the doorknob. Once the screws are removed pull straight out on the inside and outside doorknobs, and they will slide off.

      Strikeplate

      Remove the screws in the strike plate located on the edge of the door. Take off the strike plate. After you have removed both doorknobs and the strike plate you will be able to pull out the door latch barrel. Pull or push out the door latch barrel from the edge of the door. It will slide out of the same location from where you removed the strike plate. Most keyed entries also have a deadbolt that is normally replaced at the same time as the locking doorknob.

      Remove the set screws in the deadbolt. The deadbolt is directly above the doorknob. The set screws are located on the deadbolt cover plate on the inside of the door. Use a Phillips head screwdriver to completely remove the screws. After you have removed the screws, both sides of the deadbolt attached to the inside and outside of the door will come off. Pull on both sides of the deadbolt at the same time to remove it.

      Remove the deadbolt strike plate. There are two screws holding the strike plate on the edge of the door, directly above the strike plate. Use the screwdriver to remove both screws. After you have removed the screws the deadbolt barrel will slide out of the same hole from where you removed the strike plate. Push or pull out the deadbolt barrel from the door.
