How to Move an Above Ground Swimming Pool

Moving an above ground pool requires physical work but do not forget about doing some paperwork as well. Remember to write down or mark where parts came from so that reassembly will go smoothly. A moving project of this magnitude requires a minimum of three people to complete. The heaviest part of the pool by far is the pool wall, which is one continuous sheet of metal that is bolted together to form a circle. If you still have the original boxes that all of the equipment came in, that would help, but if not, other storage containers will work. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Drain the pool by placing your vac head with the vacuum hose attached in the bottom of your pool. Turn the system to the waste setting and begin vacuuming to waste. Operate the vacuum until only inches of water remain. Do not let the pump run dry.

    • 2

Remove the ladder, the return inlet fitting, any pool lights and pool alarms that are in place.

    • 3

Remove all screws from the skimmer faceplate and remove the skimmer unit from the pool.

    • 4

Unhook the pump and filter system and their respective hoses.

    • 5

Remove the drain plugs from the pump and filter canister, allowing any accumulated water to run out.

    • 6

Remove any debris from the pump basket.

    • 7

Empty out old filter media, whether it is sand, D.E. powder or a cartridge, and then clean the inside of the canister. Clean and dry both the pump and the filter canister, and then replace their plugs.

    • 8

Remove the top caps from all of the posts first, then the entire top ledge, making sure to keep all similar hardware together. Remove the top rail of the pool and then all of the coping strips.

    • 9

Remove the pool liner from the pool wall and fold it in on itself in the center of the pool area. Remove the top plates and then remove the uprights and bottom plates.

    • 10

Remove the row of joining bolts holding the pool wall together in a circle. Roll the wall into a tight coil. Secure the pool wall with duct tape or rope to keep it coiled.

    • 11

Remove any water remaining on the liner and fold it up. If you plan to reuse the liner, make sure it does not remain in direct sunlight during any part of the process. The sun will shrink vinyl, so keep the liner moist until folded.

    • 12

Keep an inventory of the parts you have grouped together along with basic re-assembly instructions. Replace all rusted parts such as sections of the bottom rail, top or bottom plates and any screws that water has compromised.
