How to Remove Old .Bkf Files in Windows XP

If you do a routine backup on your computer, your hard drive may have numerous backup files, or .bkf files, throughout your My Documents directories. Over time, these backup files can accumulate to the point where much needed hard drive space is taken up by documents that you no longer need. Removing these files is simple and only takes a few moments of time. Once the files are deleted, you will gain more storage space on your computer.

Instructions

    • 1

Click on your Start menu and select "Search" from the options given.

    • 2

Type "*.bkf" into the text box on the search wizard screen. Do not include the quotation marks.

    • 3

Choose the location where you wish to have the search for backup files performed. The default is local hard drives, and this will work fine for most computers.

    • 4

Click the search button and allow the wizard to search for the files. The search wizard window will begin to populate with *.bkf files as they are located.

    • 5

Click on "Edit" from the top text menu on the wizard. Choose the option "Select all." All the *.bkf files will now be highlighted.

    • 6

Click on "File" from the top text menu and choose the option "Delete." This will place all of the *.bkf, or backup files, into your recycle bin.

    • 7

      Close the search wizard.

    • 8

Right-click on the Recycle Bin icon on your desktop. Choose "Empty Recycle Bin" from the options given. If you are asked if you are sure you want to do this, click "Yes." The *.bkf files are now removed from your computer.

Tips & Warnings

  • To gain even more space on your hard drive, be sure and run Disk Cleanup regularly. Disk Cleanup can be located by clicking on your Start button and then "All Programs." Choose "Accessories" and then "System Tools." The Disk Cleanup programs may take several minutes to complete. Make sure you check the options to remove temporary downloaded and Internet files.
