How to Start a Motorcycle Repair Business
More than mechanical knowledge and talent is needed to open and run a successful motorcycle repair business. A well-thought-out business plan, tools and supplies, a location, skill, knowledge and financing are all necessities. Marketing and excellent organization are also required for a successful motorcycle repair business.

1
Write a business plan. Contact your local Small Business Administration (see Resources) for help. Your plan should include your goals, methods, mission and financing options.
-
2
Locate a shop for your business. Perhaps you have a shop at your residence already established and organized for your work. You may opt to simply work from it. Check with your city or county to determine if your area is zoned appropriately for your business before you open. If you choose to open a shop elsewhere, again, check with your local officials to ensure it is zoned accordingly. Your new location will need several things, including water, electricity, heat and restroom facilities. A large parking area is not a big necessity, because motorcycles don't take up too much room.

3
Organize the tools, supplies and equipment you own. Take inventory of everything you have. After inventory, determine if you need to purchase additional items to run your shop. Many mechanics charge by the hour, so you'll want to make sure your shop is orderly and it's easy to find the tools and supplies you need. Keep on hand common parts and supplies such as filters and oil.
-
4
Establish an office. If you're not computer savvy, keep detailed paper records of your work. If you choose to use a computer, be dedicated about entering details about jobs and supplies purchases. If your shop is within the city limits, you must acquire a business license. It is very important to maintain current sales tax, accounts payable and accounts receivable records. If you need help with this, hire an office manager.
-
5
Advertise your business. Talk it up and let people know what you do. Network by joining the chamber of commerce in your community. You will establish many positive contacts as a result. Work with motorcycle dealers and clubs to promote specials or unique activities you sponsor.
-
6
Stay current. Educate yourself constantly by subscribing to magazines and purchasing necessary manuals.

Tips & Warnings
Create a vision for your business. Assess your talents and experience, along with your likes and dislikes. If you're especially adept at working with the motor on a motorcycle, then you might be interested in specializing in this work. If you're even more talented with working with a motorcycle frame, this might suit you more. If you're a jack of all trades, you may prefer general motorcycle repair work. Maintain insurance on your shop and tools.
Check with your local city or county officials for any other legal matters concerning your business within your community.
