Once you bring your puppy home, you will want to train him. One of the first commands your puppy will need to learn is to "Come." This gives you control so that your puppy doesn't run off and get lost when you take it to the park or the beach. You will also need to teach the puppy to come if the puppy seems to be bothering another animal or a person.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Treats
  1. Step 1

Place your puppy one step away from you. Hold up a treat and say "Come" in a commanding voice. If you use a faint or friendly voice, the dog will not take you seriously.

  2. Step 2

Give the dog the treat when it takes the step toward you.

  3. Step 3

Take three steps back. Once again, hold the treat up and say "Come." When the puppy comes, give the puppy the treat.

  4. Step 4

Keep increasing the distance between you and your puppy. Always hold the treat up and call the puppy using the word, "Come."

  5. Step 5

Once you think the puppy understands the command, try it without the treat.

  6. Step 6

Practice in 10-minute intervals over the course of a few days. Your puppy should have the command down by then.

Tips & Warnings
  • Puppies under the age of 6 months old are difficult to train. You may need to wait until your puppy is 6 months old before you try this.
  • Don't give your puppy the treat if he doesn't come. This would confuse the puppy and keep him from learning the meaning of the word "come."
