Silver and brass are delicate metals. It is important to clean these precious metals on a regular basis to keep their luster and shine. Weekly dusting and a monthly deep cleaning are vital. The good news is that special tools are not required for this task. You can use household cloths and cleaning products, such as Maas Metal Polish, Griffith Insta Clean and Simichrome Metal Polish, which are safe and effective to use on brass or silver. Here are some more helpful suggestions for cleaning.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Silver and brass cleaning product
  • Dust rag
  • Two ultra fine cloths
  1. Step 1

Dust the silver or brass item. Use a feather duster or a soft rag. Lightly sweep the item with the duster. If this is a vase or an item with an opening, dust the inside as well. This will remove loose debris.

  2. Step 2

Dip your ultra soft cloth into the silver and brass cleaner. You may also use a product that is liquid instead of a cream. Pour a capful of the product onto the cloth. A baby washcloth or a cloth safe for cleaning glass lenses will not damage the finish.

  3. Step 3

Set the item on a paper towel on a hard surface. If the item is round, try holding it by one side. Then switch when that side is complete.

  4. Step 4

Wipe the cleaning product onto the brass or silver item. Rub the entire piece in small rows. Pay attention to any creases, as they should receive a deep cleaning as well.

  5. Step 5

Rub the cleaning solution off the silver and brass with the second soft cloth. Remove the cream or liquid in a circular motion. Then put the item away. Typically, drying time is not required.

Tips & Warnings
  • Remember that brass and silver are delicate. Do not use any abrasive chemicals or cleaning tools. View the directions on your specific product before cleaning. These steps are for Maas Metal Polish, Griffith Insta Clean and Simichrome Metal Polish.
