How to Make Money With Greeting Cards

There are two ways to make money with greeting cards, in the visual arts and in writing, according to the Greeting Card Association (see link in Resources).
The artwork on greeting cards is usually created by artists on staff of the greeting card companies or it is licensed from established artists, photographers or cartoonists whose body of work, if lacking the familiarity of a household name, is recognizable. The words, though, are often those of freelance writers.

How to Make Money with Greeting Cards

1. Visit the Greeting Card Association website (see link in Resources). Pay attention to the pages on Tips for Artists and Tips for Writers, which contain good general information on trends in the industry and card types and styles throughout the year.

2. Visit greeting card shops. Read cards to understand what kind of writing the greeting card companies want and what kind of writing you must produce to succeed and make money in writing them.

3. Contact greeting card companies and request their writer's guidelines. Most will either have the guidelines on their website or will send them to you by email.

4. Follow the writer's guidelines when you submit your work to a greeting card company and keep submitting to the greeting card companies with whom your work seems to fit.
