      Go to to the salary page, by clicking on the "Salary" link with a $ icon next to it.

      In the "Job Title" field under "Calculate Your Salary," enter your career choice. Be sure to specify a location by completing the "City & State" or "Zip" fields below "Job Title."

      Click on the "Graph" button. This will bring you to a general, easy-to-read graph of the lowest, typical and highest possible salaries for the career you entered.

    Compare Wages With the Bureau of Labor Statistics

      Go to the Bureau of Labor Statistics wage comparison website at
      http://www.bls.gov/bls/blswage.htm.

      Click on the link "For over 800 Occupations." This will take you to a salary comparison document, categorized by specific career choice.

      Click on any of the links provided for about 400 industries to compare wage estimates classified by industry.

      To search salaries "By State," go to the page and choose your state of interest by clicking on the state on the map.

      Choose the occupation of interest for that state, or click on the link "All Occupations" to compare salaries.

Tips & Warnings

  • When searching by state on the Bureau of Labor Statistics website, you can also click the link for the state below the map.

  • In the final step with Yahoo Salary, provided by HotJobs, there is a drop-down menu to add years of experience in a particular field. This is meant to give extensive detail for the purposes of further salary comparison. However, by adding years experience, you will be rerouted to another site, Salary Center, which is powered by Payscale. This site will then lead you through an long process that even asks for past employer information, which isn't necessary for a general salary search.
