How to Turn Off a Gas Water Heater
Gas can accumulate in enclosed areas if the pilot light to the gas water heater goes out. Many homeowners turn off the water heater before leaving home for an extended period to prevent a booming surprise. Another water heater hazard is a water leak. Running an empty water heater can cause serious damage.
It's also important to turn off the water heater before you do any maintenance to it. The difficulty of turning off the gas water heater depends on the ease of access to the supply lines and settings. In a properly installed water heater, this is not a problem. Use a flashlight to easily spot the valves and settings.

Move the pilot light control valve to "Pilot."

Turn the valve of the cold water supply line to the left to stop the flow to the water heater.

Turn off the gas valve located on the gas supply pipe to the tank.

Check to see that the pilot light has gone off.

Sniff the air to make sure there is no gas odor.
