How to Wire Component Car Speakers

Component car speakers feature separate woofers and tweeters, providing better sound-staging and clearer sound reproduction than you'll get from regular 2-way or 3-way car speakers. This configuration does make the wiring of component car speakers more complicated than wiring coaxial speakers. The exact circumstances of how your speakers will be wired will depend on many factors, such as the type of car you have and where the speakers are located. It's important to understand the general principles involved so that you can wire your component car speakers properly.

Identify the parts of your component system. Each part of the pair of speakers will consist of a tweeter (a small speaker for high frequencies), a woofer (a larger speaker for mids and lows) and a crossover (a set of electronic components that route the correct frequencies to each of these speakers).

Connect the tweeters to the crossovers. Each tweeter will have a wire with two leads attached to it. One wire will be marked "+" and the other "-". On each crossover you'll find a pair of screw terminals marked "Tweeter; +, -." Connect the "+" wire to the "+" terminal and the "-" wire to the "-" terminal for each tweeter. To do this, unscrew the terminal screws, slip the wire into the terminal and tighten down.

Connect the woofers to the crossovers. Each woofer will have a wire with two leads attached to it. One wire will be marked "+" and the other "-". On each crossover you'll find a pair of screw terminals marked "Woofer; +, -." Connect the "+" wire to the "+" terminal and the "-" wire to the "-" terminal for each woofer. To do this, unscrew the terminal screws, slip the wire into the terminal and tighten down.

Connect each crossover to the amplifier that will power the crossovers. Cut a length of speaker wire for each crossover, attach it to the amplifier and connect the leads of the speaker wire to the terminals marked "Input."
