Use Flaxseed in Recipes

Flaxseed can add a delicious nutty taste and aroma to many different recipes. It is extremely nutritious, containing large amounts of essential fatty acids and fiber. Flaxseed can be used in recipes in a variety of ways, and is most commonly found in baked goods. However, it also makes a great fat and/or egg substitute. Use any of these methods for adding flaxseed to your recipes.

From Quick Guide: Flaxseed 101
Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Ground flaxseed
  • Whole flaxseed
  • Coffee grinder (optional)
  1. Step 1

Use flaxseed in recipes as a substitute for margarine, oil or butter. Use 3 tbsp. of ground flaxseed for each tbsp. of margarine, oil or butter that the recipe requires. It can be used for all or part of the fat in any recipe, depending on your need or desire.

  2. Step 2

Use flaxseed in recipes as a substitute for eggs. Combine 1 tbsp. of ground flaxseed with 3 tbsp. of water for each egg, and allow the mixture to sit for approximately three to five minutes. This makes a great vegetarian or vegan egg substitute.

  3. Step 3

Use whole flaxseed in recipes for cookies, muffins, pancakes and breads. Add a scoopful to the dough and stir well to combine before baking. Use as many or as little as you like, but a general rule is to use about 1 tbsp. per cup of dough.

  4. Step 4

Sprinkle flaxseed on top of cookies and muffins before baking. This will add extra crunch to your baked goods, and make them more visually appealing. It is also a great way to get children to eat flaxseed.

  5. Step 5

Grind flaxseed in a coffee grinder, or use ground flaxseed if necessary, and add to the dough of any baked goods. Grinding the flaxseed yourself will result in a fresher, tastier version of the food than using pre-ground flaxseed. Add about 1 tbsp. of ground seeds per cup of dough, and bake according to the recipe instructions.

  6. Step 6

Add whole flaxseed to soup, salad and casserole recipes. Stir in a few tbsp. to a few cups of flaxseeds depending on your tastes, and continue with the recipe instructions. It can be added prior to or after cooking.

Tips & Warnings
  • Adding flaxseed to baked goods as a substitute for fat will cause it to brown more quickly. Using flaxseed as an egg substitute will make the food chewier, and it will typically have less volume.
