This bed frame project uses some assembly techniques that will acquaint a new woodworker with ways to strengthen a project. It is a frame with wooden side rails covered with two sheets of plywood that will provide a sturdy and attractive alternative to metal frames.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Measuring tape
  • Two sheets of ½-inch plywood
  • 1-by-4-inch lengths of pine for side and end frame
  • 2-by-2-inch lengths of pine for side and end frame supports
  • 4-by-4-inch leg posts for each corner
  • Wood screws
  • Wood glue
  • Drill
  • Screwdriver
  • Stain or paint
  • Lacquer
  • Paintbrushes
  1. Step 1

Measure the size of your mattress and add 2 inch to the length and width for a secure fit. Purchase your plywood, sides and supports pre-cut at the lumberyard for your convenience. Be sure this frame is large enough to fit your mattress snugly. You will mark exact measurements on each of your four leg posts.

  2. Step 2

Build the frame by countersinking side frames to the leg posts 2 inches from the bottom with wood screws. Drop in wood glue for a study hold. Repeat with top and toe sides.

  3. Step 3

Use wood screws to attach the 2-by-2-inch lengths of pine at the bottom inside of the frame. This is the inside rail that the plywood will rest on.

  4. Step 4

Finish the frame with stain and lacquer and allow to dry.

  5. Step 5

Place the two sheets of pre-cut plywood onto the support pieces. You may attach them to the support rails for more sturdiness.

Tips & Warnings
  • This bed frame can be used as a low platform with just the mattress or raised to normal height with the addition of a box spring.
