Instructions

    • 1

Measure your little girl's waist. Double the number or even triple the measurement it if you want an extra full skirt. Tulle can come in different widths, however, it generally comes on bolts that are 60-inches wide. This means the tulle can be cut in half lengthwise, giving you a double layer of tulle for the skirt. Therefore, only purchase the amount of tulle of the final measurement. You will also need matching thread and ¾-inch elastic the size of her waist, plus 2 inches.

    • 2

Cut the tulle the measurement of your child's length, from waist to knee, plus 1 inch. Because the tulle is 60-inches wide, you will have enough to cut an additional piece of tulle the same size.

    • 3

Place the two pieces of tulle one on top of the other. Holding the two pieces, bring the side edges together and pin. Sew a ¼-inch seam, closing the sides of the tulle skirt for the fairy costume.

    • 4

Fold down 1¼-inch at the top of the skirt and pin. Sew ¼-inch from the inside edge, except for a 2-inch opening. This will form a tube in which to add the elastic for the waist.

    • 5

Join a large safety pin to one side of the elastic. Guide the pin through the opening in the waist of the tulle skirt. Work it through to the other side of the opening. Pin the front and back sides of the elastic, overlapping them at 1 inch. Sew across the elastic several times for strength.

    • 6

Push the sewn elastic back inside the tube. Hand sew the waist opening shut. You have made a perfect tulle skirt for a fairy costume.

Tips & Warnings

  • Tulle can be purchased in varying sizes of mesh. The finer mesh will lay flatter and the wider mesh will stick outward with more body. Add a matching set of a colored T-shirt and tights for the costume. Sew a length of satin ribbon to the end of each sleeve and tie bows. Purchase two colors of tulle to make alternate layers for a different look for the fairy costume.
