How to Replace an HP NC6230 Laptop DVD Drive

The HP NC6230 laptop comes equipped with a variety of features intended to meet the needs of the corporate or small-business user; among these features is a DVD±RW optical drive suitable for burning large files or multimedia projects to writable CDs or DVDs. Over the lifetime of your HP NC6230, you may find it necessary to replace the optical drive in your laptop, due to hardware failure or obsolescence.

      Close any currently running applications and eject any CDs or DVDs that may still be in your DVD drive. Turn off your computer. Disconnect the power cord and any other cables that may be connected to your laptop. Locate the battery bay on the rear of your laptop; find the two latches next to the battery bay and slide them to the right. Remove the battery and set it aside.

      Locate the screw hole for the MultiBay security screw; if present, remove the installed screw and set it aside.

      Slide the left edge of the DVD drive's front panel toward the right. Remove the DVD drive from the MultiBay.

      Insert the replacement DVD drive into the MultiBay. Push it all the way in until you feel it click into place. If desired, reinsert and tighten the securing screw.

      Reinsert the battery into the battery bay and apply pressure until you feel it click into place. Turn the laptop over and reconnect the power cord and any other previously disconnected cables.

      Turn on your computer and log into your operating system. If necessary, install any software that came packaged with your DVD drive. The replacement procedure is now complete.

Tips & Warnings

  • You may purchase a replacement DVD drive directly from the HP Parts Store (see Resources). Locate the input box labeled "Search for part number" and enter the number of your desired component.

  • The part numbers of the three DVD drives compatible with this device are: 373314-001 (8x DVD-ROM); 375557-001 (DVD+RW/R and CD-RW combo drive); 373315-001 (DVD/CD-RW combo drive).

  • If your old DVD drive is still operational, save it for use as a backup; store the old drive in the same anti-static packaging that your new drive came in.

  • During installation, minimize the risk of a static discharge by periodically touching a nearby metal surface.

  • Avoid touching the connectors on the rear of the DVD drive.

  • Do not drop, strike or shake the DVD drive during installation, as this may damage its internal components.
