How to Train a Puppy to Walk on the Lead
Any kind of pet is a huge responsibility. Pets must be fed properly, always have water, and they must have proper exercise. Caring for a new puppy can be frustrating, especially when it comes to training. Remember that a puppy is like a young child in many ways; he will get into things he's not supposed to, so he needs to be taught rules, such as walking on a lead. Before any kind of training can begin, though, the puppy must get used to wearing a collar and a leash.

1
Place the collar around the puppy's neck, making sure it's not too tight or too loose.
-
2
Allow the puppy some time to get used to wearing the collar, especially if it's the first time. It is normal for a puppy to try to bite or pull off the the collar.

Once the puppy has gotten used to the collar, connect the leash. The first few times, keep a close eye on him as he drags the leash around. Leave it on for a few minutes at a time. The best time to do this exercise is during meal times, when he's playing, or during other positive times. This will show the puppy that the leash is a good thing. Let him get used to the leash slowly.

4
When the puppy is not fighting the leash anymore and feels at ease walking with it, take the end of it for a few minutes and follow him around. Do not pull or strain the leash, and do not try to walk him just yet.
-
5
Make time on the leash pleasurable. Playing games with him, such as calling him to come to you as you hold the end of the leash, will help him get used to walking by the lead. Give the puppy plenty of praise or even a small treat when he does something right.

Practicing every day in the home is best for the puppy, because it's a safe environment and it's more comfortable for him. Once the puppy has learned to walk by the lead indoors, he can be taken outdoors, preferably in your backyard. There he can be walked for the next few weeks.

If your puppy can be walked calmly in your backyard, he can be taken to other places, such as a neighbor's yard, and eventually around the neighborhood.
