Choose a web host first. The web host is where you will store your web page so it can be accessed on the Internet. Decide if you want to pay for web hosting or use free web hosting (see resources). There are advantages to paying for your web hosting over using a free web host. Paying for your web host allows you to use a domain name, www.yourname.com. This makes it easier for your web page to be found by visitors and allows you to have a URL that fits your web page. Paying for a web host also means you won't have to suffer through advertising on your web page. It's more professional all the way around, and less annoying for your visitors.

Design your web page. You can do this in one of two ways. Most web hosting services have built-in tools that allow you to make your web page. You can choose colors and layouts, upload your own graphics, and create the text of your web page all with free tools provided by your web host. If you'd rather use your own software to design your page, use something like Adobe's Dreamweaver or a free web page editor to make your web page (see resources). Many of these are WYSIWYG, which means you design your web page without any knowledge of HTML code. These editors work like word processors.

Make your layout clean and easy to navigate. Keep it as simple as possible. Design a simple menu bar that breaks your web page down into general categories. Examples of categories you might use are "About" to tell about who you are or what your company or product is about, categories for each of the products you sell, and a "Links" category for providing links to other web pages you want to recommend to your visitors. Adding graphics to your page is a good idea, but keep them to a minimum, and try to avoid using too many animated graphics. They can become annoying. Make sure to choose a background that will allow visitors to read the text on your web page. Hard to read text on a web page will send your visitors elsewhere.

Think about your visitors. Not everyone has a fast Internet connection. Try to design your web page to be as visually appealing as possible, but consider visitors who might have a hard time loading pages with a lot of media, such as videos and music. If you want music playing on your web page, include an embedded control that will allow visitors to turn it off.

Promote your web page. Most web hosts offer a service that allows you to send your web page URL to search engines and other promotional sites on the Internet. Always include a link to your web page when you send out an e-mail. If you visit a blog or guest book, always include the URL to your web page. These efforts will result in visitors to your new web page.
