Things You'll Need:
- Tape measure
-
Step 1
Choose whether you want a right- or left-handed bow, depending on your dominant hand.
-
Step 2
Determine the appropriate draw length of the bow. This length is the farthest back the bow can be drawn and is the position from where an arrow is shot. To figure out the appropriate draw length, stand with your back flat against a wall and raise your arms so your entire body forms a "T" on the wall. Measure the distance between the tips of your middle fingers. The distance divided by 2.5 is the appropriate draw length.
-
Step 3
Determine the appropriate draw weight. This refers to the amount of weight a shooter has to pull to bring the bow to its draw length. You should be able to draw the bow back without having to raise it or put a great deal of effort into it.
-
Step 4
Determine how much you can afford to spend on a bow. Keep in mind that you also have to purchase arrows and other related equipment.
-
Step 5
Handle a few bows that meet the length, weight and price criteria you have established. The bow you choose should be comfortable to hold, light enough to carry and have sufficient power to kill the animal species you plan to target.
